You might not be familiar with the name Dries Van Noten but he is a rising star in fashion design circles and last month the Council of Fashion Designers of America selected the Belgium Van Noten as the best international designer of the year.
Retailers such as Neiman Marcus are excited about his collections. Ken Downing, director of Neiman Marcus says, “He’s [Van Noten] inspiring so many people, whether it’s conscious or subconscious.”
Downing adds, “He’s all about personal style: Five women can wear Dries Van Noten and you’ll see five women who look totally different.”
In person the designer appears unassuming and prefers a quiet life in Belgium’s countryside. The fifty year old Van Noten comes from a fashion family with his grandfather and father both being tailors and while they had an interest in the fashion retail industry, Van Noten felt inspired to sketch his own designs. His father had hoped that he would continue in the retail business but now with Van Noten’s success he is happy with his son’s decision to follow fashion.

You would really have to read the stories to appreciate the brilliance. Read more…

The hip hop culture is treated with so much scorn and disregard in all industries, except possibly for the music industry, but maybe not even in the music industry. It’s quite interesting to see how young Black men are widely disrespected because of how they dress. It goes back to the argument that fashion makes a statement. Read more…
