Many people would think that starting your own clothing line is an easy process. Well basically, it’s really not that difficult. However, the difficult process in creating a clothing line is the amount of research that goes into producing a successful clothing line. Almost anyone who has the passion and flair for fashion could create their own brand of clothing and open up a business. Of course, coming up with design ideas for your own label can be easy. However, operating your business and effectively selling your products can be difficult processes.
Before coming up with ideas and designs, the first thing you would want to do is create a foolproof business plan that includes aspects of your production, delivery, marketing, and finance:
- Who are you selling your products to?
- Who are going to buy these clothes?
- Who are they made for?
The fact of the matter is, the fashion industry is a huge industry with a customer base that is huger. As such you will not be able to cater to everyone and will need to determine your area of specialization. In other words, do you want to create clothes for females? If so, are they for babies, infants, pre-teens, teens, adults, or the elderly? And what kind of clothes are you designing? Are they sports clothes, professional clothes, or everyday casual clothes? Because the industry is so vast it’s important to specifically determine what you’re trying to achieve.
If you already know who your target customers are going to be, the next step is to make sure you know what they want. It’s important to start surveys, talk to them, learn from them, and know who your competitors are. Get fresh ideas by recognizing the fashion trends that your target market is into. This is important because creating a clothing line without knowing exactly who you’re creating for is a recipe for failure.
Once you’ve got a clear idea as to who your niche customers would be, the next step is to recognize and identify various distribution channels on how to sell your products. Create a business strategy and recognize the strength and weaknesses of your company and also your competitors. Based on your business strategy, you would then know how to distribute and sell your products effectively. After you’ve established your target market, your sample products and your distribution channels, you can either start by selling your products on a small scale for example through flea markets or start on a larger scale which ultimately means higher capital for your business. However, it is recommended to start small and let your demands grow. Once demands for your clothing line have increased, you could venture into your fashion design business full time.
A few approaches that you can take in expanding your business are:
- Finding a retailer to buy the designs you intend to produce
- Sell your products through an existing shop owner
- Open up your own store
If you’re doubtful about the operations of starting a clothing line, you could always enroll into a fashion school or have a mentor to guide you through the processes.
